Above you see a draft for the design of the main protagonist and antagonist in my racebent Red Wood Riding Hood adaption.
I’m doing this as a game concept for an university application, and for some reason I instantly had the idea to adapt the fairy tale for the modern world - with a Native American cast. When Robin goes to visit her Grandmother, who’s in the hospital, she not only gets to know a strange, elegant man with a distinct love for fur coats who claims to be her uncle - she’s also confronted shortly after with him also being a Practicer of the Witchery Way. Which means that she and her grandmother are a shortcut to power for him.
Her grandmother can only drag them all into the plane of spirits before the man gets away. Determined to save her grandmother, Robin has to find out the true name of the aspiring skinwalker - which she does by gathering her grandmothers childhood memories of him as a child, which are scattered throughout the spirit world.
Yeah, that’s the basic outline of the story. Basically, the main reason for me submitting this here is less that I’d think it’s great and more that I’d appreciate getting help with it. I live in Germany, so my chances to get a hold on actual Navajo people are pretty much nonexistent and I cannot research things like the daily life in a reservation or the relationship of modern Navajo to the older spiritual beliefs of their culture first hand. If anyone who knows a lot about all this reads this, I’d really appreciate someone who can answer me question every now and then and who I could run my ideas by. Because I really want this to be a good concept - both as a story/potential game and as a racebent fairy tale.
Pointers to legit and believable resources would be very much appreciated, too! It’s very probably that this game will never be made, but if I manage to graduate and find a job in the branch, I’d definitely aim for making it some day…
